Weather Display

Understanding the "Weather" display screen

Which Stations are displayed

Whilst within the "Weather" tab, different sites can be selected, by clicking on the name of the site of interest. Depending on the users screen size, these can be found either within "Stations",  or they will already be present within the bar across the top of your browser page (this is dependent upon screensize).

This page will display the data recorded by any active meteorological sensors within the system/cluster.

Structure of the Weather display

At the base of the page, the system overview message is present, along with the count down timer, indicating the number of seconds until the window is refreshed. When the counter expires, the Port-Log database will provide the latest set of sensor records to the web display. Depending on the sampling frequency of the sensors, the latest data record may not change with every refresh of the web display.

The content of this page includes up to three time-series plots, a wind direction polar, and a real-time snap-shot of meteorological conditions
The three time-series plot include wind speed (knots), wind direction (knots) and a miniature version of the tidal time-series.

Just above the plot, and as can be seen above, a brief overview of the current wind conditions. To the left, an arrow indicates the recent wind speed, and an arrow indicates whether this is increasing or decreasing. To the right, a value for the trend in wind-speed (20-minute average) again signifies how current conditions are changing.

Menu Options

1. Menu Options
User can move between different sections of the system. Here, Weather has been selected.

2

Station Name

2. Station Name
Displays which station the following information relate to.

3

Meteorological Time Series

3. Meteorological Time Series
Recent (previous 12 hours) time-series plots of wind speed and direction. The text at the top left of each plot displays the value of the most recent measurement, and an arrow indicates whether this is increasing or decreasing. At the top right of each plot, a 20 minute average has been calculated, for the trend in wind speed (upper of the two plots), and the average gust over that 20 minute period (lower of the two plots). Again, arrows indicate whether these values are increasing or decreasing.

Pressing the up and down arrow keys will move the time-series back or forward by 1 day.

Hovering the mouse over the lines will display the actual time and values of the observation or prediction.

4

Tidal Time Series

4. Tidal Time Series
A smaller version of the time-series plots shown within the Tides selection.

5

Recent Wind Direction Polar Plot

5. Recent Wind Direction Polar Plot
A polar (directional) plot of recent wind direction, to note changes in wind direction.
The yellow dots indicate the speed and direction of each observation for the last 10 minutes
The red line indicates the speed and direction of the latest observation

6

Current Meteorological Conditions

6. Current Meteorological Conditions
A text/numerical snapshot of current meteorological conditions at the specific station, in reference to the array of sensors installed at the station. The arrows indicate the trend of the observations.

7

System Time

7. System Time
A timer indicating the system time (time zone dependent on client specifications), with sunset time given as an indication of remaining light for the day.

8

Refresh Timer

8. Refresh Timer
A timer to indicate when the browser will refresh (usually every 10 seconds). If there is new data to display, this will replace values already in place upon the web page.
