Introduction to Port-Log VTS

The following User Guide has been created to help the user navigate around the Port-Log VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) styled pages.

The Port-Log VTS display screens show a real-time snap-shot of the data, along with some recent historical data (<12 hours).  The sections of the screen and different pages within the website are described below and on the following pages in more detail.

The website uses Javascript to control the refresh process and data timers, therefore Javascript must be enabled within the web-browser for this page to function.

Footer

3. Footer
In the footer at the base of the webpage there are two timer controls. The first, to the left, displays the system time as stored by the server. This will be presented in either UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) or a local time zone depending on the system configuration. The second, to the right, is a count down timer. This timer is to demonstrate the page is working and indicates the number of seconds until the display window is refreshed. When the counter expires, the Port-Log database will provide the latest set of sensor records to the web display, where available.

Depending on the sampling frequency of the sensors, the latest data record may not change with every refresh of the web display.

If the display refresh is successful, the updated sensor data will be displayed immediately and the counter will reset, otherwise several attempts will be made to re-issue the instruction to the server whilst the counter displays the message “Updating…”. If a connection is still not established or the database query fails to respond the sensor table will clear and a diagnostics error will appear, the count down timer will display the message “FAILED”. During this time the web page will continue to reconnect to the server indefinitely and the count down timer will show each attempt with the “Updating…” message.

As a precaution against web-browser cache limitations and script performance over extended durations the entire sensor display web page will refresh every 10 minutes.
